Gwich'in Speakers

Gwich’in Tribal Council and The Children First Society in Inuvik

The Gwich’in Tribal Council and The Children First Society in Inuvik have partnered to create an immersion language program to create a Gwich’in language learning opportunity for preschool children in Inuvik. The program will offer full days of immersion for children and evening classes for their families. We are seeking fluent speakers to work with the children and to teach the evening class for families in Inuvik, NT. 

Experience and Qualifications 
It is not necessary that you have certification in teaching, and you do not need to read or write Gwich’in, but you are a strong speaker and you carry a wealth of knowledge about Gwich’in language and culture. You have personal experience in helping to raise young children and you understand that children learn through play and exploring the world. You are passionate about passing on the Gwich’in language helping to create the next generation of speakers. You are willing to work with other speakers and program staff to create the best program for the children of your community. You are patient and you enjoy the presence of children. You are willing to participate in the training opportunities the program will provide. 

Personal Suitability 
Working as a dynamic team member your energy and creativity helps you to play with, and guide the children in a developmentally appropriate program. Your compassion and understanding for the Gwich’in language and culture assist you to increase the understanding and knowledge in all the program children, families and staff. Your dedication to children and their families motivates you to continue on in this demanding yet rewarding position.  

Compensation 
We are offering very competitive rates and a flexible work schedule.
