Gwich’in Tribal Council Releases: Our Whole Gwich’in Way of Life Has Changed

(Inuvik, Northwest Territories, Canada – January 12, 2021)

The Gwich’in Tribal Council Department of Culture and Heritage worked with Leslie McCartney to create Our Whole Gwich’in Way of Life Has Changed/Gwich’in K’yuu Gwiidandai’ Tthak Ejuk Goolih: Stories of People of the Land.

This book contains the stories of twenty-three Gwich’in Elders from the communities of Fort McPherson, Tsiigehtchic, Inuvik, and Aklavik in the Northwest Territories. They share experiences of living and travelling on the land, speaking to their values and knowledge.

We are thankful to the wonderful Elders who contributed their stories: Antoine Andre, Caroline Andre, Hyacinth Andre, Annie Benoit, Pierre Benoit, Sarah Bonnetplume, Marka Bullock, Lydia Alexie Ellias, Mary Martha Firth, Sarah Ann Gardland, Elizabeth Greenland, Violet Therese Jerome, Peter Kay Sr., Mary Rose Kendi, Ruby Anne McLeod, Catherine Martha Mitchell, Eunice Mitchell, Joan Ross Nazon, Annie Moses Norbert, Alfred Semple, Sarah Simon, Ellen Catherine Vittrekwa, and Jim Julius Vittrekwa.

Without their contributions, this valuable resource would not have been possible. We are also thankful for the hard work of the Department of Culture and Heritage and Leslie McCartney in compiling this collection.

For those interested in purchasing this book, it is available from the University of Alberta Press in either PDF or hardcover. It can also be purchased from the Gwich’in Tribal Council office.
